Book Journal

A note: All the highlighted words in my blog are clickable links.

I am an avid book reader so my Amazon Kindle is never too far away from my side.  Today, I would like to show you all my Reading Journal Filofax.

It's an A5 pink Finsbury. I also have the pink Kindle Cover, this folds back on itself so it stands up on its own.

My first cover page is the Kindle picture. I just love this picture of the person sitting under a tree; it reminds me of my late Dad. He told me once, when he was a young lad, he would often take a book and go and sit under a tree for hours, reading it.

So this is my set up:

The first set of tabs are: Kindle Purchases, Books Read, Samples, Wanted, Authors and Book Reviews.

The next set: are 2 sets of A-Z index dividers:

These house my Book Lists.  I have A-Z of Kindle Downloads and A-Z of Paper Books.

Across the top I have monthly tabs:

I write what books I read on every day, each month.  So far, it's been a bit of a slow year!

Books I buy & Reading List pages:

These are my Kindle downloads and what I paid for them. One of the best things about the Amazon Kindle is, you can get an awful lot of very good, free books.

This is my Book Read section.  I have read a lot more this year, but in this section, I only write the books I've completed.

I have an A-Z list of all the samples I've downloaded, again this is another brilliant e-book feature, as it allows you to read the first few pages/chapters of any book you are interested in.  I did have these under another set of A-Z index dividers, but I had to remove them as my Filofax became obese.

I have hundreds of samples and I can never remember what the actual story is about, so I sometimes use sticky notes with little reminders on.

My Wanted List:  I do own some of these books already in paper form, but I now want them for my Kindle.....just waiting for Amazon to reduce the prices.....for example, The Passage, I own the hard back version and it's really heavy to hold, so I checked Amazon and their Kindle version was around £9.  A few months later it was down to £5.  I brought it a little while ago for less than £3.  So sometimes it's worth waiting, for the price to drop.

Authors I enjoy:

Authors Lists.  A list of the books wrote by the Authors I like.

The R is for the books I've read
Book Reviews cover page:

This is how I fill in my book reviews:

And a completed Book Review.

Book List Cover:

First I have the A-Z for the Kindle Books I own. I use the book titles for these lists.

Then I have the A-Z of the Paper books I own. I go by Authors for this list.

I also have many books on particular subjects such as Tarot, Angels and Reiki, so I have lists of those books too under their own headings.

And that's pretty much my book Journal.  Hope you enjoy!

  3. What a brilliant idea! That's really clever Gail.

I feel the need to do something like this. I am also a readaholic and have a Kindle loaded with books and many bookshelves bursting at the seams! At the moment, I just categorise my books on my Kindle by putting them into different 'collections', such as: fiction, self help, reading now, finished etc. I'm not bothered about reviewing them in a Filofax (it's quicker to type it out on Amazon) but I'm not very organised with my reading and the books that I own or would like to read. This could well be a project for me!

I've just advertised a pink zipped personal Finsbury for sale but I'm changing my mind now . . . that slot on the front is perfect for my Kindle . . . what have you done?! LOL X

  4. Thanks Ladies, pleased you like the blog.

Tracy, I love pink, I'm the only female in a house of 3 males so I get pink whenever I can. lol I also have a pink netbook and pink phone cases.

Alison, looking forward to seeing your Book blog too hun. x

Lucy, I must admit, I don't often write a book review and I really should, because I read so much I forget what most books are about.

I recently read a blog where the owner uses a A5 Flex to but her Kindle in, it looks awesome....really need to take the names of these blogs so I can share.

  5. I suppose, with these wonderful, detailed book Filos, you aren't on Goodreads? And Lucy, are you?

  6. @Ro: Nope, I've never heard of that. Will Google it, thanks!

  7. Hiya Ro, I am on Goodreads too! lol

  8. Love your setup! I've got a section in my A5, and to be honest, it's only that section that I need the bigger size for. I suppose I could turn it into a books-only filo, but then I'd have to go and buy a new one for everything else (oh noes!)...

Do you rewrite your pages of books you own, when you get a new title and it won't fit in the space you've got? (like, if you bought another Diana Cooper book?) Not being able to have them in the 'right' order would niggle at me. How do you get around that?

    1. Hmmm, not thought of that to be honest, maybe it would be an idea to have Author dedicated pages!

    1. Doris, My hubby bought my Kindle a few days after Amazon released them and I LOVE it. It's been everywhere with me, 100's of books at your fingers tips and if I even fancy something knew, it's delivered to the Kindle within seconds.

  10. Love this layout - it's one of the things that I have to do, but it has been put on the back burner for a while now. I guess it just means the task will be even bigger when I get round to doing it. :o)

  11. What a great way to organise your reading and book list.

  12. I really love this idea! I also have so many books that I need to get reading so I might have to set myself up a Filofax especially for this purpose also! :)

  13. I love what you've done with this, so beautifully organized! I'm inspired. TFS!

  14. Wow, love it & it's all so organised! I've always been a bookworm from an early age & always have an out of date reading list in my filo some where. You've inspired me to get it sorted :)

  15. Excuse, I have to go mop up my computer...I just drooled a little bit on it.
I'm reading 40 books this year and my list is in a section of my everyday filo. It's sufficient but...it's not THIS. I want THIS!

  16. I'm so with my fellow admirers above: THIS, I want THIS! :)
Thank you for posting and inspiring, Gail, and a great blog you have!

  17. Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments, I only started Blogging a couple of weeks ago and I was really nervous no one would read it. So nice to know that you enjoy my posts. Thanks to you all. x

  18. Gail - My wife bought me the Kindle for my birthday in April. I never thought I would get much use of it but I was so very wrong. It travels with me everywhere and I have downloaded all the Ken McClure books as well as book from my youth _ The Three Musketeers , and so forth. Fantastic setup. I really should do something to keep track of all the books I have on my Kindle.

  19. Gail, I love this idea. I'm going to blatantly steal many of the ideas that you've presented here (if that's okay) :-) I hadn't thought about creating a Filofax dedicated to my reading...thank you for introducing this option to me.

  20. The Kindles are brilliant inventions, did you know you only ever use battery power turning the page and turning it on and off. But I like to have a hardcopy inventory in front of me so I know what I have on their and what I've read.

DEM....go ahead and steal some ideas hun....am sure I did that with some of the pages in there too. I just tweaked them to fit my needs. lol

  21. Saw this on Pinterest and love love it! I'll have to do this.

  22. I love it! And i'm soo jealous! I want the filofax too..did you made it by yourself or brought it with these pages??

  23. This is fantastic! Last year I gave away all my books (thousands of them!) to a non-profit bookstore and I started adding more books to my Kindle. I read about 1-2 books a week, but I have never found a reader's journal/diary that I like to record in. This is definitely what I am going to do. Thanks so much for sharing. You did a fantastic job.

  25. I have taken your idea for a Reading Journal and have made it into a digital Reading Journal using Microsoft One Note. It is the same concept but I merged both the Kindle and Physical Books from A to Z. If you would like this template let me know and I will send it to you.

    2. Sure thing just send me your request to moncrief.kelly.j@gmail.com and in the subject line add " Digital Reading Journal" so I know what to send you. Sorry for the late reply been super busy with raising 2 grandbabies 2 and 1. Then having parents come take them away and move them to VA day after mother's day but did not find out about the moving until Mother's day. Then became a grandma all over again when my second oldest son was born in June.

    3. Just now saw your reply, I'm so sorry to hear that about the grandbabies but glad you have a new little around now! I'll send the e-mail now.

  27. Did you create your own printables?

  28. What a great idea. I am going to have to do something like this for me. Maybe not in a fliofax but in a mini binder.

  29. This is an amazing post! You are so organized! Are you on LibraryThing.com? I catalogue all of my books there (over 1400).

I keep a paper journal for books I've read (list and reviews), plus log them at http://yearlyreads.wordpress.com, as well (you just never know what could happen to a paper journal!).

Love to meet fellow book lovers! :)

  30. This is exactly what I have been looking for! I've been trying to get ideas to make a journal like this for myself but could never really decide how to go about doing it. I just ordered supplies to make something similar soon. I'm especially glad to make the section for my Kindle books because I always forget what I have. When I have it complete I will be doing a blog post about it, so feel free to check it out. :) http://thewornbookmark.wordpress.com
